smoking gun（老外说“smoking gun”是指什么意思

“熟词偏义”是英语中常见的情况，看似每个单词都认识，连在一起就不知道是什么意思。比如下面的表达：

1、Are you smoking是什么意思？

smoke除了跟烟有关还有其它含义，来看Urban Dictionary对Are you smoking?的解释：

即：当你的朋友或某个你认识的人说了一些愚蠢的话，你就可以用这个句子，所以当老外朋友跟你聊着天，突然来了一句：Are you smoking?

要表达的意思是：你是不是傻？/ 你是不是脑子进水了？这个表达来源于美国人，问对方：是不是吸毒了？这会让人失去理智，所以后来引申为问：你是不是傻？

例：

Are you smoking? Just look at what you've done!

2、“你抽烟吗”英文怎么说？

要问别人抽烟吗？可以用：Do you smoke?

3、smoke like a chimney

smoke like a chimney意思是：“烟瘾大；烟抽很凶”

例：

My grandpa has smoked like a chimney all his life.

我爷爷这一辈子抽烟都很凶。

而表达烟瘾大的人，可以说chain smoker

例：

He is a chain smoker, smoking at least three packs a day.

他烟瘾很大，每天最少吸三包烟。

烟瘾大的人也可以说heavy smoker

4、smoking gun

剑桥词典是这样解释的：information that proves who committed a crime，即“确凿的证据”，也就是我们常说的“实锤”

这个表达源自于夏洛克·福尔摩斯的小说，意思就是开枪的人在开枪之后一定留有证据~

例：

①It is Jamie who stole that painting. And it is a smoking gun.

就是杰米偷走了那幅画，铁证如山。

②To prove that it is not me who did that, I finally find the smoking gun.

为了证明那一切都不是我干的，我最终找到了证据。

5、go up in smoke

go up in smoke也是常用地道的英语表达，本来一开始指的是被烧光、烧毁，后来也用来延伸表示化为泡影，化为乌有

大家可以这样理解：go up表示上升，in smoke是指呈现出烟雾的状态，所以连起来go up in smoke指的是没有任何成果，最后都化为泡影了。

例：

He saw his life savings go up in smoke when the stock market crash.

股市崩盘后，他眼看毕生积蓄化为乌有。

6、smoke and mirrors

smoke本身还有烟雾的意思，因此在美式俚语中，smoke还被延伸用来表示巧妙的谎言，骗人的鬼话，而smoke and mirrors又是骗人的鬼话又是镜子这样虚假的东西，就是用来表达虚幻或欺骗行为

例：

①Celebrity image is built on smoke and mirrors.

名人的形象不过都是虚幻。

②Much of what he said was, frankly, smoke and mirrors.
